Thailand 30-day stamp extension 2026 — complete guide
Entered Thailand on a visa-exempt stamp and not ready to leave? You don’t have to. In most cases you can extend your stay by another 30 days without crossing any borders. This guide covers everything you need to know about the Thailand stamp extension — who qualifies, what documents you need, how much it costs, and where to do it in your city.

What Is the Thailand 30-Day Stamp Extension?

When you enter Thailand without a visa — on a visa-exempt entry — an immigration officer stamps your passport with permission to stay for 30 days (or 60 days for nationals of certain countries). This stamp can be extended by a further 30 days at any Thai immigration office, without leaving the country.

The same applies to a Tourist Visa (TR): a 60-day TR can be extended by 30 days, giving you up to 90 days in-country on a single entry.

Entry type Initial stay Extension Total
Visa-exempt (most countries) 30 days +30 days 60 days
Visa-exempt (60-day countries) 60 days +30 days 90 days
Tourist Visa (TR) 60 days +30 days 90 days

⚠️ The extension is available once per entry only. After you use it, you must either leave Thailand (border run) or obtain a new visa. You cannot extend the same stamp twice.

Who Can Extend Their Stamp?

The 30-day extension is available to nationals of countries that have a visa-exempt agreement with Thailand. This includes citizens of most European countries, Australia, the US, UK, and many others. The full list is available on the Thai Immigration website.

Requirements to qualify:

  • You entered on a visa-exempt stamp or Tourist Visa (TR)
  • Your stamp has not yet expired — overstay makes extension impossible
  • You have a current TM30 filed by your landlord or hotel
  • Your passport is valid for at least 6 months and has a free page

Documents Required for a Stamp Extension in Thailand

📋 Standard document checklist

  • Original passport — valid for at least 6 months, with a free page for the new stamp
  • TM7 application form — download in advance or collect at the office on arrival
  • Passport photocopies — bio-data page, page with current stamp, page with latest entry stamp. Sign all copies in blue ink
  • TM30 receipt — address registration filed by your landlord or hotel. Without a current TM30, your application will be rejected
  • One passport photo, 4×6 cm — colour, white background. Available near the office for ~100 THB
  • 1,900 THB in cash — government fee, exact amount preferred

🚨 TM30 is the number one reason stamp extensions fail. If you recently re-entered Thailand or moved to new accommodation and your landlord hasn’t updated the TM30, immigration will turn you away. Check it’s current before making the trip.

How to Extend Your Stamp: Step by Step

  1. Confirm your TM30 is current — contact your landlord and verify they filed a TM30 after your most recent entry into Thailand. If they haven’t, ask them to do so via the online immigration system.
  2. Prepare your documents — collect everything from the checklist. Make extra copies of each page and sign them in blue ink directly across the photo on your passport copies.
  3. Download and complete TM7 — fill it in at home to save time, or pick it up at the office.
  4. Visit the immigration office — go on a working day. Arriving early (08:30–09:30) means shorter queues. Take a numbered ticket at the door.
  5. Submit to the officer — the check takes a few minutes. Pay 1,900 THB in cash.
  6. Collect your extended stamp — issued the same day. Total time at the office: 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on how busy it is.

Where to Extend Your Stamp in Thailand

Extensions are processed at the immigration office in the province where you’re staying. Here are the main offices in the most popular destinations:

🌴 Phuket

482 Phuket Road, Talat Yai, Mueang Phuket. Mon–Fri, 08:30–16:30. Satellite offices at Patong and Blue Tree (10:00–15:00).

🏙️ Bangkok

Chaeng Wattana Government Complex, Building B. Mon–Fri, 08:30–16:30. The busiest office in Thailand — expect queues and arrive early.

🌊 Pattaya

Pasak-Noen Immigration Office, Chonburi. Mon–Fri, 08:30–16:30. Satellite service point on Jomtien for some services.

🏝️ Koh Samui

Ko Samui Immigration Office, Samui District. Mon–Fri, 08:30–16:30. Confirm address before visiting — location can change.

🌿 Chiang Mai

Promenada Resort Mall, Nong Chom, San Sai. Mon–Fri, 08:30–16:30. One of the most efficient offices in Thailand — recommended if you’re in the north.

🌺 Krabi / Ao Nang

Krabi Immigration Office, Mueang Krabi District. Mon–Fri, 08:30–16:30. Shorter queues than Phuket or Bangkok.

⚠️ All immigration offices close on Thai public holidays. Check the holiday calendar before you go. If your stamp expires during a holiday period, apply earlier than you normally would.

How Much Does a Stamp Extension Cost in Thailand?

  • Government fee: 1,900 THB — fixed nationwide
  • Agent-assisted (Phuket): from 5,000 THB all-inclusive — document prep, accompaniment, government fee included
  • Passport photo near the office: ~100 THB
  • Photocopying: ~20–50 THB at a copy shop near any immigration office

💡 DIY or agent? If your documents are in order and your TM30 is current, it’s straightforward to do yourself. An agent is worth it if you’re unsure about your TM30, want to skip the queue, or want to eliminate the risk of being turned away for a missing document.

After Your Extension: The 90-Day Reporting Requirement

If you stay in Thailand continuously for more than 90 days, you are required to file a 90-day report (TM47) at an immigration office every 90 days. This is not a visa extension — it’s simply a notification of your current address.

  • Can be filed online at immigration.go.th or in person
  • Due window: between 15 days before and 7 days after your 90th day
  • Late filing fine: 2,000 THB
  • Applies to any visa type if you stay continuously beyond 90 days

What If Your Stamp Has Already Expired?

If your stamp expiry date has passed, you are in overstay. Extension is no longer possible. Your options are:

  • Go to immigration immediately — voluntary surrender for a short overstay typically results in a fine of 500 THB per day (maximum 20,000 THB) with no further consequences
  • Do not wait — overstays beyond 90 days risk detention; beyond that, re-entry bans of 1, 5, or 10 years apply

🚨 Already in overstay? Don’t panic — but don’t wait either. Message us and we’ll advise on the best course of action for your specific situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I extend my stamp online?
No. A stamp extension requires your physical presence at an immigration office with your original passport. Online filing is only available for the 90-day report.

Can I extend my stamp more than once?
No — the extension is available once per entry only. After using it, you must leave Thailand to get a new stamp (border run) or apply for a longer-term visa.

How many days before expiry should I apply?
You can apply any working day before your stamp expires. We recommend going 3–5 working days early to account for queues, public holidays, or TM30 issues.

What if my landlord won’t file the TM30?
Explain that it is their legal obligation under Thai law. Most cooperate after being informed. If they refuse, contact us — we help expats resolve this regularly.

Can I extend my stamp at a different province from where I’m staying?
Technically yes, but your TM30 needs to reflect your actual current address. Mismatches between your TM30 address and where you claim to be staying can cause problems.

What comes after the extension — border run or new visa?
Depends on your plans. A border run gives you a fresh 30–60 day stamp. A DTV or Non-O visa gives you much longer stays with in-country extension options. Read our full visa extension guide → for all the options.
